we imagine the memorial as a vibrant and symbolic skin, like a garment to resemble the handicraft of the seamstresses and the history of the building. thus the shirtwaist and it´s lace patterns becomes our conceptual frame to translate selected patterns into a build structure, engraved with the names of the 146 victims. the shapes of womens´ bodies arise out of the pattern and ascend towards the top of the building. in agony the workers bodily expressions reflect on the catastrophy and at the same time symbolize the continuing fight for the workers’ rights. the pattern and the shapes break up the massive character of the building and generate a play of reflections and shadowplay onto the facade.
